What is the Outstanding Youth Achievers' Recognition?

The YOUTH ASSEMBLY Youth Achievers' Recognition honors 16-18 years old high school students who have significantly contributed to a cause and shown leadership in community service projects, scientific research on sustainability, youth mobilization for an MDG related issue or other social development initiatives. We ask YOU to nominate a talented young person who will represent your organization / association / institution.

Nomination deadline: July 9, 2010

  • All nominees and their organization / association / institution 
    will be listed on the website of the Youth Assembly

  • All Awardees will be presented an Achievement Certificate, and
    their names may also be forwarded to local media

  • Honorees will be invited to a ceremony at the U.N. with Olympic Medalists during the Youth Assembly

  • All honorees are encouraged to apply for Youth Assembly participation with a chaperone.

Who is eligible?

All currently enrolled high school junior and senior students 16-18 years old, nominated by their organization / association / institution.

How can I be nominated?

All Outstanding Youth Achiever nominees must be chosen by a teacher / educator or community supervisor.

NOTE: All recipients of recognition will be highlighted at the Youth Assembly's website throughout the events at the United Nations. Additionally, certificates will be presented to honorees who attend the YA events. Alternatively, honorees who cannot attend may send a self-addressed and stamped large envelope for certificate mailing. If attending, honorees should travel with a chaperone and are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses during the Youth Assembly activities at the United Nations. All events at the U.N. are free of charge beyond a small registration fee.

The 7th Annual Youth Assembly recognizes the following youth leaders for humanitarian efforts in support of the 8 UN Millennium Development Goals:

 

Adarsha Shivakumar
College Prepatory School, United States
Age: 16

  • Cofounder, Executive Director and leader of Project Jatropha

Project Jatropha is an international collaboration to promote Jatropha curcas plant as an ecologically friendly and economically sustainable source of bio-fuel in rural India

  • United Parivarthana, a rural NGO that helps farmers, and Labland Biotechs, a plant biotechnology company, together to achieve their goal

  • Won following awards:

  • Brower Youth Award

  • Gloria Barron Prize

  • International Eco Hero award

  • 2010 President’s Environmental Youth Award (Project Jatropha)

Vivek High School, India
Age: 16

  • Part of school team that went to the NASA Headquarters in Houston, USA

  • Participated in NASA Space Settlement Design Competition

  • Won 3rd place in Indian Space Research Organization Competition

  • Won 1st place in INTEL Quiz in November 2008

  • Attended summer camp organized jointly by the Goethe Centre and Max Mueller Bhawan India on a full scholarship

  • Delivered a speech on his experiences in Germany at the International Youth Peace Conference in Chandigarh

  • Participated in Project smile and Project Pick a Plant with Global Environment Concert

  • Coordinator of We Aim High, Earth Warriors, Oxygen…a movement

  • Member of Action for Nature, Jane Goodall Roots and Shoots, Captain Planet Volunteers

  • Master of Ceremony at G Quest, PIHASAS, Dream School

  • G Quest is Patna’s largest quizzing fest that seeks to promote the cause of environment

  • PIHASAS is Patna’s largest event and the topic/subject of every contest is related to environment

  • Dream School is an effort to help students think and talk about a better education system in India

  • National Science Olympiad and National Cyber Olympiad

  • Organizes and hosts the following workshops:

  • Prayas - involves children of government schools and slums in various activities and contests to preserve the environment

  • Oxygen - a students’ movement that aims to make education the biggest issue

  • Ambrosia - a workshop for schools students to inform them of the small ways that they can contribute to bettering the environment

Age: 17

  • Outstanding student with GPA of 4.33

  • Primary organizer of “Midnight Run” 

  • “Midnight Run” is an activity that collects contributions of clothing from the school and general community to bring to homeless shelters in NYC

  • Organized “Sleep for Solutions” to raise awareness about homelessness in Westchester County

  • At “Sleep for Solutions”, 40 residents slept out on HS grounds
