UNIVERSITY FOR PEACE

THE U.N.-MANDATED GRADUATE SCHOOL OF PEACE AND CONFLICT STUDIES

The University for Peace (www.upeace.org) is the only university in the United Nations system authorized to offer academic degrees in the field of peace and conflict studies. Nine master's programmes offer specialized, multi-disciplinary courses and our international faculty use engaging and participatory teaching models for classroom instruction. Advanced students and young professionals from around the world attend the university.

The campus is located 30 kms southwest of San Jose, Costa Rica within a natural reserve composed of a secondary forest and the last remnant of primary forest (1.200 ha) in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. Hence, this protected area is very rich in fauna. It shelters mammals such as monkeys and deer; reptiles; and over 300 species of birds as well as approximately 100 varieties of trees. The University's installations and protected area make up 303 ha.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

WHAT IS CASE STUDY ANALYSIS? Case study analysis is an effective way for professionals to develop the critical thinking skills needed to effectively manage organizations and programs.

Unlike lectures or materials presented solely in written format, case studies present a narrative overview of the events that have occurred at a particular organization or project. Details in a case study may include:

  • Information about the project (issue and scope of work, budget, staff)

  • Objectives and strategies

  • Challenges encountered

  • Results and recommendations

Analysis of the steps other leaders have taken to address specific problems and issues will give you the opportunity to learn about the challenges you may encounter.

Your problem solving skills will be cultivated as you engage in a team-based critique of existing projects.

The case studies utilized in 2010 will relate to the following issues:

  • Primary education

  • Resources and conflict mediation

  • Advancing global health

  • Creating economic opportunities for women

During the program, field trips to MDG related projects in Costa Rica will highlight the efforts of specific groups, their challenges and creative solutions devised by project leaders.
