THE 7th ANNUAL YOUTH ASSEMBLY AT THE UNITED NATIONS (YA): UN HEADQUARTERS IN NEW YORK, AUGUST 4 – 6, 2010.

THE YOUTH ASSEMBLY GATHERS YOUTH LEADERS (16 - 24 YEARS OLD) FROM AROUND THE WORLD AND INVOLVES THEM IN THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE 8 UN MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (MDGs).

DUE TO POPULARITY AND UN RENOVATIONS, SPACE IS VERY LIMITED. REGISTRATION IS STILL OPEN, ONLINE AT: WWW.FAF.ORG.  DELEGATES ARE URGED TO REGISTER SOON TO ENSURE THEIR PLACE AT THE OVERBOOKED, ANNUAL EVENTS.

NOTE: FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON UNIVERSITY WILL HOLD RELATED YA LEADERSHIP SEMINARS PRIOR TO AS WELL AS AFTER THE ASSEMBLY: 1) JULY 29 – AUGUST 2, 2010 AND 2) AUGUST 7 – AUGUST 11, 2010.

The Youth Assembly empowers nearly one thousand young people annually through lectures, workshops, and other special events. Attendees receive practical help on how to start NGOs, administer or manage campaigns, and identify existing work by governments, the UN, or civil society at home or abroad.  There is a special focus on the implications for social entrepreneurship on MDG success.

Lead Sponsor in 2010 is the Permanent Mission of Finland to the United Nations.  Dozens of other Permanent Missions to the UN endorsed the Youth Assembly events.  Other International NGOs affiliated with the United Nations co-sponsor the events along with several United Nations agencies.

Delegates to the Youth Assembly learn ways to identify viable approaches to MDG success – the corner stone of the UNs better world approach to improving the lives of millions of people across the globe.  In 2009, nearly 1000 delegates attended the Youth Assembly, Leadership Seminar, and UC Peace Arts Festival during August. Highlighted guests have included Dr. Arun Gandhi, Kathy Ireland, and Reverend Jesse Jackson.  Youth Achievement in MDG success recognizes the accomplishments of ten younger delegates, ages 15-17.  During a gala luncheon hosted by a Youth Assembly Director, these delegates all receive personal recognition statements from the YA for significant contributions to humanitarian service at home or abroad.  See Youtube for more: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mjjp5G_wH4s

LEADERSHIP SEMINARS AS COURSE STUDY AVAILABLE BEFORE AND AFTER THE YA.

Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU), the foundationÕs academic partner will hold two Certificate-bearing courses before and after the Youth Assembly in 2010.

¥ The Pre-Leadership Seminar will focus on older youth already active in civil society and working on MDG projects in their home countries.  The ÒPre-LSÓ will take palace July 31 – August 2 on FDUÕs Metropolitan Campus.

¥ After the YA, a special Post-Leadership Seminar will feature a meeting between 100 Chinese and 100 US teens, at FUD from August 7 – 11.  This bilateral discussion and cultural exchange will focus on youth leadership, the MDGs, and FUN between the two sets of teens.

ÒFor the foundation, this is core to our mission,Ó said FAFÕs Executive Director and YA cofounder Patrick Sciarratta, of the Youth Assembly events.  ÒHere we have created a real opportunity to partner with colleagues at the United Nations and invite youth leaders into UN Headquarters to discuss their role in achieving the 8 UN Millennium Development Goals. Here, they get to meet the real players and learn about issues central to the past decade of UN initiatives – and where the MDGs can take us from here. We want to empower youth leaders to create careers and other opportunities in fulfillment of these important development goals.Ó  Mr. Sciarratta concluded, ÒPeace through cultural exchange is our mission, and this is the program that will ensure its success.Ó

Registration for delegates is ongoing for the 7th Youth Assembly at the UN (events are free after initial application fee) and the related Leadership Seminars at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Registration is a selective process and open to all youth ages 16-24, and, upon approval, Observers:  chaperones, faculty, or other community leaders, attending as part of youth delegations or working in the field with youth.
